Create a web page from the content of a Google Doc.

Set Up

Open Page Settings > Page Type and choose Google Drive File. Select the doc you wish to embed and customise it with the settings below. TIP: The picker will show you all file types in Drive, to narrow down to just Docs click the down arrow and choose Filetype: Documents.

View

The default is Framed which will show your document in a frame exactly as it is in Google Docs, you can then choose to show it in Read Only or Edit Mode (see below).

If you want to create a web page from the selected Doc, change the View to Embedded. This will take the content of your Doc and store it as html on the site, you can use the settings below to change the way your page looks.

Mode

  • Read Only - shows the doc without any top menu, users can choose Switch to Edit mode (if they have access) via the Page Menu
  • Edit - shows the doc with all menus (you can uncheck Show Menus to remove these)

Options

  • Preserve Formatting - use the Google Doc formatting (eg bold, colors) rather than the OverDRIVE site format you chose in Site Settings.
  • Framed - embed the doc in a frame (this disables any other options)
  • Hide paragraph style ‘Title’ - this will hide any text formatted with the Google Style “Title”
  • Hide paragraph style ‘Heading 1’ - this will hide any text formatted with the Google Style “Heading 1”
  • Paging - this option will split up a document into pages whenever there is a page break in your doc, it's great for presentations

Tables

If your document has one or more tables within it, you can enhance how each one appears in OverDRIVE - including being able to sort and filter the data on the page:

  • Bordered - add a border to your table(s)
  • Condensed - condense the rows in each table
  • Striped - add a stripe to every other row for ease of viewing
  • Hover - add a stripe when the viewer hovers over each row
  • Full Width - make each table full width, no matter how wide it was in the embedded doc
  • Sort - make each column in the table sortable - users can click on the column headers to sort by that column
  • Filter - add a filter box at the top of each table so viewers can filter the data
  • Paging - adds paging to your table if you have too many rows to fit the screen size
  • Responsive - adds a hover showing the columns that don't fit the screen width

Images

Images will show exactly as they do in the Google document when framed is used. However, when embedded and preserve formatting is used image alignment will not exactly replicate the document. It is not possible to show text wrapped around an image and some image sizes may vary.  If you wish to add an image into the page body we recommend adding the image and text into a table within the doc and hiding the borders. When aligning images 'normal text' is required.
