As this article explains, you can open Office files from Google Drive using:

  • Google Documents for Word (.doc, .docx)
  • Google Sheets for Excel (.xls, .xlsx)
  • Google Slides for PowerPoint files (.ppt, .pptx)

You may see a message like "Some Word features can't be displayed in Google Docs and will be dropped if you make changes" because the Google apps don't have all the same features as Office.

If you have Microsoft Office and Google Drive File Stream installed you should also see options to Open with the relevant Office app.

From Overdrive it would be two steps:

  1. from the page menu or by right-clicking on the file, choose Open with Google Drive
  2. from the new browser tab that opens up and wait for the Open with menu to appear - it should contain options for apps installed on your PC as well as the Google Drive editors.
